This John Ford classic has all the requirements for a great film. While a bit sappy at times with the old army Irish types, Victor Mclaughlin got a second life with these films, there is still enough here to engage the intellect. Shirely Temple is interesting to see grown up. Her acting style certainly did not evolve much over the years.

What makes this film great are Fonda and Wayne, both playing roles opposite to their norm. Fonda is wonderfully arrogant and yet vulnerable at the same time. Wayne is humble and second fiddle for a change, he comes off well being the wiser, disgruntled subordinate. What really makes this film is the scenry an production quality. John Ford was painstakingly accurate with unifroms, equippment and gear. He provides a believeable image of army life, with all its pettiness and sense of honor. Everything is accurate down to the various bugle calls and the troop commands issued to the men. While there are obvious comparisons to Custer, what makes this film interesting is the sheer study of military incompetence. Fonda’s character is desperate to make a name for himself, and he sacrefices his command in order to do so. The battle scenes are exciting to watch, even the old fashion carriage chase with the Indians running about is well done. In the end what is the message of this film? There probably isn’t any exactly. Fonda’s character creates a military disaster, pure and simple, yet we see that Wayne is willing to carry on this legacy of heroism to inspire the regiment in its continued campaigns against the hostiles. Here we see how myths are made from the most unlikely sources. A fine film all around, and probably the best of Ford’s cavalry epics.

The first, and in my opinion, the best of John Ford’s so-called Cavarly Trilogy. “Fort Apache” is Ford’s thinly veiled re-telling of the Custer-Little Bighorn legend. A subject that fascinated Ford, but he didn’t want to be hemmed in by the history so he completely changed the names and locations so he could tell the story the way he wanted to tell it.

Henry Fonda plays a Custer-like Colonel who has seen his career’s meteoric rise during the Civil War end with peacetime and an assignment to a frontier outpost. He resents this, and looks for an opportunity to earn fame and glory. He finds this opportunity at the expense of the Apaches who have left their reservation for good reasons. If he can defeat the Apaches then his career will certainly be boosted. Fonda’s Colonel Thursday is a brave and competent officer, who does recognize some of the injustice and indignity that the reservation system has imposed upon the Apaches, but his lust for glory blinds him to everything in the end.

John Wayne plays the competent, experienced second in command who clashes repeatedly with his superior. The film also features a love interest between a grown-up Shirley Temple and her then real-life husband John Agar. Being a Ford movie there is plenty of comic relief from various Irish NCO’s, and romanticized vignettes of frontier cavalry life.

Yes, Its Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman in a colorful, tuneful musical comedy - Just for You (1952) The songs are excellent and include the lively Zing a Little Zong as well as The Live Oak Tree, I’ll Si Si Ya in Bahia and a Mexican Ballet sequence. In the picture Bing is having trouble with his teenage children, played by Robert Arthur and Natalie Wood. Ethel Barrymore appears in the picture as a school headmistress cum motor mechanic, specialising in starting tricky outboard motors! Excellent fun all the way. The film does, however, have its serious moments and makes a good point regarding the music publishing business.

Here Comes the Groom was made in 1951 in Black & White. This is an excellent musical comedy (Directed by Frank Capra) with serious moments. Alex Smith appears in the picture and a rival to Jane Wyman for Bing’s affections. Songs include In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening, Your Own Little House, Misto Christopher Columbus and Bonne Nuit. There are a few cameo guest appearances.

The quality is excellent especially considering the material is over 50 years old. The double bill is good value for money. Enjoy!

Fans of the great Bing Crosby will certainly enjoy this double bill from the early 1950’s. With the Hollywood studios reeling from the effects of television, the House On UnAmerican Activites Committee, and the war in Korea, “Here Comes The Groom/Just For You” were and are better than average musical fare both then and now. Both films find Mr. Crosby in splendid voice with better than average song material such as “Zing a Little Zong” and the Oscar winning “In the Cool,Cool,Cool of the Evening.” Famed director Frank Capra, who gave us such American classics as “You Can’t Take It With You” and the holiday favorite “It’s A Wonderful Life” elevates “Here Comes The Groom” out of the level of routine studio fare while Elliott Nugent wraps a twenty year career behind the camera with his jewel-like “Just For You.” In addition to Crosby, both films feature the radiant Jane Wyman and a number of major stars to include Franchot Tone and Ethel Barrymore along with rising stars Natalie Wood and Anna Maria Alberghetti. Like another Bing Crosby double film offering, “Holiday Inn/Going My Way”, “Here Comes The Groom/Just For You” serves as a pleasant reminder just how much fun movie musicals were and still are.

I sought this title out for two reasons, one being the fact that I am a big fan of the manga, and two being the fact that “Oh My Goddess” is a pretty popular series. After watching it it is easy to see why. Each episode is incredibly fun to watch, has beautiful artwork, delightful characters, and more.

In “Episode 1: Moonlight and Cherry Blossoms”,Keichi Morisato lies alone in his desolate, lonely apartment. Starving, Keichi desperatly trys to find some restaurant that is still open so he can get some takeout. But he never knew a simple desire for food could change his life so abruptantly. For Keichi misdials and finds himself with a different delivery, a wish granting goddess named Belldandy. But when Keichi jokes about Belldandy living with him, Belldandy activates his wish and becomes assigned to stay with him forever.

In “Episode 2: Midsummer Night’s Dream” Belldandy and Keichi have been living together pleasantly for five months now. That day, Keichi checks his mail and finds what he believes to be a pornograhic video, Entitled “Sexy sister #2″. He eargerly puts it in his VCR. Low and behold, Urd, Belldandys sister, jumps out of the T.V. set and persuades Keichi to seduce Belldandy during Keichi and Belldandys vacation. Keichi makes attempt after attempt but to no avail; he’s not brave enough. And so Urd decides to drug Keichi. But Urds plan goes from clever to disasterous. This Episode is my personal favorite; I love the character Urd. She is generally a pretty attractive person, but she’s not at all like Belldandy, Personalitie-wise. When Urd gets interested in something, it literally becomes her passion. Urd is very dedicated to spiceing up Belldandy and Keichi’s relationship, which results in some of the funniest moments in the “Oh my Goddess” series. I noticed a little racy behavior due to the arrival of Urd, however, some of which might be found objectionable to the parent, but its overall pretty innocent. The climax to this episode was, in my opinion, quite touching.

In “Episode 3: Burning Hearts on the Road” We are introduced to Skuld (I believe it’s pronouced like School) who is totally against Keichi and Belldandy being together. Skuld is deeply attached to Belldandy, and wants her to leave Keichi’s side and join her in heaven (or wherever Goddess’s live). This particular tale has a solid plot and, at times, has delightful tension.

In “Episode 4: Evergreen Holy Night”, “Oh My Goddess” becomes much more serious. Melodrama haters need not apply. In this episode, troublesome bugs, which Skuld was meant to elimanate, have arrived on earth. Bug mainly cause Pandemonium to an almost dangerous level, and the only way to get rid of them is for all three of our goddess’s are to cease interaction with Keichi (gasp).

“Episode 5: For the Love of Goddess” This is an incredibly tounching episode. Belldandy Belldandy has been confined to her room whenever Keichi is around due to the destructive nature of their getting too close to each other. Soon she will be forced to leave earth. Keichi is saving up money and working all kinds of jobs so that he can buy Belldandy a going-away present: a ring. This Episode is Triumphant as it is teary-eyed.

Ultimatly, “Oh My Goddess” is a charming, above average comedy/romance. Fan’s of “Ranma 1/2″ or “Tenchi muyo!” with undoubtfully enjoy this anime. Its may not be the most complex, but it should be praised highly for what it is, a very enjoyable anime that remains to be one of sweetest love comedy’s to date.

This is a dynamite series. Oh My Goddess is a five-part anime full of wonderful music, beautiful art and warm, human characters. I am a 46 year old father of two teenagers and I own the Japanese language (English subtitled) version of these videos. There are no fighting robots or splashes of blood… just a well engineered romance with many a twist and turn. I enjoy the language and the energy that went into the making of this anime. Also… check the internet. Search for the characters in this story: Belldandy, Urd, Skuldo, Keichi. You will discover the huge following of fans behind “Oh My Goddess”. You might also like the animes “Tenchi Muyo” and “You’re Under Arrest”. Fun characters, excellent quality… Good stuff!

This documentary was originally created and broadcast by the BBC and then NOVA purchased it for U.S. Public Television. However, NOVA cut about 14 minutes of footage to include plugs for other NOVA programs. I am hoping this DVD release will put that time back.

This program traces the scientific evolution of the search for absolute zero, from the 17th century through today. It is extremely well done. Like many such programs, it takes high concept science (in this case physics) and brings it to the people. There are reenactments, interviews with experts in the field, and historical footage. The rivalries between past scientists, and the repercussions of such, are frankly examined. The creators did a superb job making the topic approachable without condescending to a non-scientist audience. For the first time, I was able to grasp such concepts as the Bose-Einstein Condensate, absolute zero and how lasers can “cool” atoms. I work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where Eric Cornell did his Nobel Prize-winning work (at Jilla). He is featured in the documentary and easily expresses in layman’s terms the ideas and methods his team used. There is some humor throughout the piece (including how he forgot to bow to the king while accepting his Nobel Prize!) to lighten the subject matter. Just recently NIST hosted a lecture with Russell Donnelly, the physicist who helped spearhead this documentary. He worked in cold temperature physics, and was asked for input to the book “Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold.” When he looked through the book he was dismayed to see no graphs, or photos or any “science.” But once he started reading, he was amazed at how the author told the story of the science through the lives of the scientistis. He realized it would make a great documentary that could reach out to the public - whose support helps keep funding for such endeavors. He also spoke about the extensive process of requesting a grant from NSF, working with the BBC and then NOVA to put this together. He showed footage from the documetary itself and I was amazed at the quality. Unfortunately, when NOVA broadcast the show in January it went up against the New Hampshire primary and then the American Idol premier. Yet, it still managed to draw millions of viewers. I am glad they are releasing it on DVD. I would love to rewatch it, and have the ability to rewind certain points that I may have missed.

Overall, I highly recommend this program to everyone. It would be a great tool for high school science teachers, for fans of Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos,” and of The National Geographic Channel and other such venues.

Having watched this program on TV with fascination, I could not wait long enough to obtain the DVD. When it arrived, watching it confirmed my view that this is one of the most stimulating programs ever. Good to watch again, and again, and with a gap, even again!

…Kubrik masterminded Dr. Strangelove, loosely basing the movie upon the book “Red Alert” (the book is a completely serious Cold War nuclear war scenario, but Strangelove is a complete and total farce). “Strangelove” came out a year or two after the Cuban October missile crisis, a year after US President John Kennedy was assassinated as well as 2 other contemporaneous films, the brilliant and paranoid “The Manchurian Candidate” and the serious treatment of the same book, “Fail Safe.”

Kubrik originally set out to do a serious treatment of the book. But Kubrik found as he tried to develop the screenplay that he kept running into scenes that he ended up writing as satire. Recognizing the challenge, Kubrik enlisted the talents of one of the best comedic screenwriters in Hollywood, Terry Southern, to do the screenplay.

Casting the film was part genius and part hit-and-miss happy accident. … Somehow Slim Pickens’ name came up and Pickens accepted the role of the B-52 bomber pilot. Even more ironic yet, Slim Pickens was more conservative than Dan Blocker, but Pickens never caught on during the film’s production that Dr. Strangelove was a comedy, much less a satire and a farce unsympathetic to the official propaganda of the cold war.

In of itself, it was a comic master stroke telling Pickens play the role seriously. Pickens was apparently no great wit, so Kubrik was able to keep Pickens completely unaware that Pickens was actually playing in a comedy, not a serious war movie (one can only assume that the humor of the situation was not lost on the other cast members, including James Earl Jones who played Capt. Kong’s bombardier.. “Don’t tell Slim this is all a big joke, we have to let him think this is a real war movie.” ).

Other than Peter Sellers’ roles, George C. Scott (later in “Patton”) and Sterling Hayden delivered memorable performances. Both were obviously instructed to play their roles “over the top.” Kubrik instructed Scott to overact the role of the cigar-smoking, gut-slapping, martini-drinking & womanizing General Buck Turgidson (get it? Turgid-son?). In the scene in the war room where Turgidson exuberantly proclaims the spectacle of a B-52 bomber evading radar by hedge-hopping, Kubrik instructed George C. Scott to deliberately overact the part. Kubrik had Scott re-take the scene several times, asking Scott to make it even more over-the-top than before. On the last take of that scene, Scott practically performed it as a burlesque parody, which was of course, the final take that Kubrik actually used.

Sterling Hayden delivered a brilliant performance as the psychotic Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, the Air Force general who unilaterally orders the nuclear strike against the USSR. The confusion of Cold War paranoia, paranoid psychosis and false sexual power in Hayden’s scenes is the blackest of black satire. Totally over the top, ludicrous and frightenlingly possible (what if one of your top military brass really went insane and over-rode all the safe-guards against nuclear war?). The insane babblings of General Ripper set the film’s direction and act as its centerpiece, delivering both Kubrik’s satire of anti-communist propaganda and the air of impossible odds for the rest of the film’s characters to overcome that they might somehow avert doomsday.

Peter Seller’s performances as the President, the British officer and Dr. Strangelove (a left-over Nazi scientist) are memorable, Sellers delivers the title role as the deranged wheelchair-bound Nazi scientist who suffers from involuntary palsied “Seig Hiels!” in his right arm. Again sex is the real underlying motive to yet another character and the opportunities for a sexually prodigious post-apocalyptic eugenic world brings the deranged Strangelove to a frenzied outburst of libidinal energy: “Mein Fuhrer! I can vwalk!” But as much as I enjoy Sellers’ roles, they seem overshadowed by the rest of the film’s characters. P>It comes probably of no surprise that the U.S. Air Force refused to assist Kubrik in shooting the movie. Having to choice, Kubrik had to resort to mocking up the B-52 flying scenes and bomber interior cabin scenes as best he could (the bomber interior was apparently such a good replica of the real thing that the FBI launched an investigation into who gave Kubrik such a detailed layout of a B-52’s flight deck). Appropriately, the exterior B-52 flying scenes hold a comic flaw if you look closely enough: In one scene, as the damaged bomber hedge-hops across the Siberian taiga (northern boreal forest), you can see that the underlying shadow of the plane is actually that of a four-engine propellor aircraft and doesn’t match the profile of the overlaid B-52 model.

Suffice it to say, when the movie came out, it was not universally received or even widely understood. It was drummed by political commentators and movie reviewers who found it to be tasteless and sophomoric. The studio was very concerned about the potential a negative backlash from its release (consider that in the same year, the Manchurian Candidate was withdrawn from theaters after Kennedy was assassinated). An internal memo described Dr. Strangelove as “a huge, sick malefic joke” and questioned the wisdom of even releasing the movie at all. After all, the movie starts off with B-52’s and tanker planes copulating during mid-flight refuelings, displays Air Force “Peace is Our Profession” billboards in the midst of a fire fight between the US Army and Air Force security, depicts two Air Force generals as complete sex-obsessed baffoons, one a psychotic and the other a braying ass, delivers a deranged Nazi scientist and finally a cowboy pilot bucking the biggest phallic bronco of his career (never mind blowing up the world).

I can think of few other films whose film makers so defied convention and created a story that really turned conventional wisdom on its head. Dr. Strangelove keeps coming at you as one outrageous scene after another, interspersed with segments of complete straight-faced dead-pan, piling them all on until the fateful end. When Pickins died in 1983, CBS news anchor Dan Rather delivered the obituary replete with the out take of Pickins riding the bomb (Perhaps DeForest Kelley topped that and made good on his threat to have “He’s dead, Jim” engraved on his tombstone….).

There are some things you just can’t live down: Being the face that gets a great closing falling scene that leads to the end of all life on Earth happens to be one of those things. Poor Slim, he’s probably suffering in a purgatory of a Liberal Methodist heaven.

In closing, I have to agree with that long-forgotten studio executive who wrote in the memo: Dr. Strangelove *IS* a huge, sick malefic joke. But it is one of the finest huge, sick malefic jokes ever created, and stands as a film masterpiece. Those who extoll the virtues of this fil

I doubt that you could imagine how much it would pain me to give a single-star rating to an edition of the film I consider to be the singular greatest contribution to the motion picture. However, the new “40th Anniversary” edition of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb is, unquestionably, requiring of such a rating. Why?, you ask.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb! Click Here

Because about fifteen to twenty percent of the screen image has been removed!!!

If you take a look, you will see that this new “Special” edition of Dr. Strangelove is presented in anamorphic widescreen, with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. This, as you can find from examining older editions of the film, is the first time the film has ever been presented in such a manner. The reason why (and you may cross-check this with the Internet Movie Database [IMDb] or any book on Stanley Kubrick worth its salt) is because Dr. Strangelove was NOT FILMED in 1.66:1. It was technically filmed with a varying aspect ratio (the reasons for which are still not fully explicated, as far as I’ve seen), but, in general, it was filmed in about 1.33:1.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb! Click Here

So, you ask, how does a film shot in 1.33:1 get presented in 1.66:1? Did someone return to the original negative and uncover material previously hidden from sight, lost on every print and VHS, Beta, laserdisc and DVD copy heretofore released?

NO!

They simply cut off the top and bottom of the screen!!!

Such things are not unprecedented. An extremely similar case is the so-called “panoramic” Gone With The Wind. The film, made in 1939 (before there was anything BUT 1.33:1, the “Academy” aspect ratio), when released in the Panavision/Technorama age of the mid-1960’s was similar chopped and changed to magically become 2.35:1. This edition was released on video and DVD a few times before, finally, it was restored to its original 1.33:1 glory.

Stanley Kubrick was absolutely notorious for his perfectionism and auteur status in the film industry, and I cannot believe that a company proposing to release a definitive “Special” edition of his greatest masterpiece would be so heartless as to unnecessarily delete a good portion of the screen.

Please avoid this new, bastardized Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. While the few new extras thereon are of interest, they can easily be seen via rental from the local video store, as suplemental to the last “Special Edition” of the DVD (which, incidentally, clearly states on the back that it is “Presented in the original aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1″.

Thank you,

Marc-David Jacobs

P.S. For those of you interested in seeing the terrible editing job for yourselves, feel free to go out and rent the new edition and the previous edition and go to seven minutes and forty-eight seconds, which is the extreme tight shot of the B-52’s CRM-114 decoder book. As you will see, an entire line of text on the top, and about one-and-a-half on the bottom are not completely missing.

Do films get much stranger or more beautiful than this? To call Peter Weir’s masterpiece “moody” and “atmospheric”, as Leonard Maltin does in his brief review, is to grossly underemphasize the sui generis, quite visceral impact, the lush, almost swoon-inducing power, of this flagrantly bizarre work of art. It’s actually difficult to describe “Picnic at Hanging Rock” in words because there’s nothing else remotely like it. I’d say that another Australian film, “Heavenly Creatures” comes closest, but that movie’s cumbersome claymation fantasy scenes and decisive conclusion are so far removed from the ethereal, open-ended nature of this film that the comparison falls apart instantly. There’s something so unmentionably chilling, even nauseating, in the soft-focus camera-work and the intentionally stilted performances, that I’m not even able to evaluate the technical aspects of this film. It has its own vernacular, its own code, that owes nothing to what has come before. If forced, I’d say this is a story about repression, about humanity-vs.-nature, about our own inability to really grasp the vastness of the universe in which we live. It is certainly much more than the story of three girls and a school teacher who dissapear on a rock formation, as intruiging as that story certainly is. There are ideas at work here, conveyed through camera shots, angles, brief snatches of dialogue and silent pauses that we might not even be able to discuss, because we don’t have the words or the courage to discuss them. Those expecting a genteel horror story of some sort or a traditional murder mystery will be confounded by “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, for it offers only questions, not answers. It taps into our deepest fears, but without ever resorting to tricks or gore. It creeps up on you and, when it is over, changes your perception of the world for days to come. I find it a terrifying movie, far more unsettling than any slasher pic or ghost tale. Its ambiguity is the key to its success. That ambiguity unnerves us because we like to have everything labelled and identified, plotted out in a rational manner. There is nothing rational about “Picnic at Hanging Rock”. It opens a small crack in the abyss and then forces our imaginations to look through that crack.

Sadly, like George Lucas before him, Peter Weir has replaced one beloved cut of the film that made his name, re-edited it and (so it seems) determined to keep the original version under lock and key. Bad move.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Picnic at Hanging Rock - Criterion Collection! Click Here

Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of those films that should have been left alone, but unfortunately Peter Weir’s considerably shorter director’s cut does the film no real favors. The additions are minor - a redundant scene of a reporter photographing the school and a very brief but much better introduction to the scene where Albert (Wolf Creek’s John Jarrett) tells Michael (Dominic Guard) his dream about his sister - but the deletions in the last third are fairly substantial and surprisingly damaging - most notably the entire section of Irma thanking Albert for finding her on the Rock, Michael’s growing relationship with Irma, the church service, Albert and Michael talking at night, and Mrs Appleyard removing Sarah’s belongings. Sadly, while it may make the film even more elliptical as is Weir’s wont, it diminishes the film’s resonance and your involvement with the already rather sketchy characters, so it’s a pity that only the director’s cut now exists in a restored version (even the Australian 2-disc DVD only includes the cut scenes as extras).

Unfortunately, a la George Lucas, the original version is almost impossible to find aside from an incredibly poor standards conversion videotape made from a poor print back in the mid-90s before the Australian film industry took film preservation seriously.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Picnic at Hanging Rock - Criterion Collection! Click Here

The restoration may look and sound better than the film ever has before, but it’s a sad trade-off for the much better film Weir originally made.

The three episodes presented on this disc have very little to do with the characters we saw in volumes 1 and 2, but manage to be every bit as interesting, compelling, and sardonic as the first two volumes. This disc (but the second episode especially) shows how other people feel about Shonen Bat and how he’s suddenly become a media phenomenon. Some people are trying to catch him, some want to be killed by him, and some just want to see him and have a good story to tell. The first episode is about three people (an old man, a middle-aged man, and a young girl) who meet in a chat room and enter a suicide pact. They attempt suicide in various ways but seem to be thwarted each time, but then decide to search for Shonen Bat to `save’ them. This creepy and darkly humorous episode seems almost like a Takashi Miike film shot specifically to fit my taste. It never gets too over-the-top but manages to have some “Wow, you could never get away with this in America” moments. The second episode analyzes Shonen Bat as an urban legend/pop culture icon. Five women (including the young wife of a scriptwriter desperate to fit into the group) exchange increasingly improbable stories and rumors about Shonen Bat. To focus on characters we’ve never even seen for a one-shot episode in the middle of a series is one hell of a risk, but Satoshi Kon takes it and makes it a great episode for fans of urban legends and lore. The ending slaps you upside the head, but somehow doesn’t feel forced. The third episode is about the animation process of your standard anime. A “Maromi” (that weird little plush dog) cartoon is being made for television by a small animation studio with an impatient staff. The staff is being picked off one by one by Shonen Bat, and the surviving animation team tries to meet the deadline at whatever cost. Maromi guides us as to who the staff members are and what their importance is, which gets us calm before everything goes very, very wrong. The animators must have loved doing this one, but must have been constantly looking over their shoulders. Imagine “The Player” as directed by David Lynch in an anime studio. Each episode is it’s own story, which works shockingly well for this kind of show. My only fear now is that the final episodes won’t be able to wrap everything up in time!

`Paranoia Agent’ defies most of conventional anime. No giant robots, big guns, or girls with blue hair. It takes place in present day Tokyo and revolves around the lives of everyday workers. It is also unique for being an anthology.

`Paranoia Agent’ is not based around the conflict of heroes and villains. It depends mostly on style. The opening credits are arguably the most memorable in anime history. We see our many characters standing in the midst of a disaster, flood, fire, earthquake, nuclear bombing. However they are all laughing uncontrollably in an insane manner, as to make us think that these characters may have come to except the horror of their lives.

The plot: Unlike most anime series `Paranoia Agent’ is an anthology, each episode seems to exist on its own, in that we are introduced to new characters whose stories begin and end with that episode, an anthology. The stories are all related in the sense that each of our characters lives in modern day Tokyo and is having trouble in life, generally work related. They all end up being attacked by boy in roller blades, Little Slugger.

The stories are very entertaining in a dark comedy way, from a sleazy reporter who owes money to the mob, a school girl by day and prostitute by night, an anime production team that’s behind schedule, friends that keep failing in their many attempts to commit suicide. Little Slugger attacks them all.

As the show progresses, so does Little Slugger. It becomes quite obvious that he is super natural. It also becomes quite obvious that `Paranoia Agent’ has absolutely no intention of wrapping things up or ever explaining the truth about Little Slugger or any of the bizarre events. And it doesn’t.

I couldn’t see this series going on any longer and it’s nice they ended it after 13 episodes allowing us to remember it fondly.

`Paranoia Agent’ works mostly because of its style. The animation and directing are great. It also works because of its very entertaining stories, as short as they might be.

The announcement of this bare bones, single disc has caused quite a stir in some fan communities..and apparently here on Amazon as well.

Here’s the skinny: At the bottom of the press release for this single DVD, Lucasfilm clearly states a box set for Season 1 (with extras) is in the works, including Blu Ray. I have to give them credit for at least telling us up front that this DVD is not intended for the people that will want the whole season. Although I am not sure who the intended consumer is for this, I guess almost an hour and a half for $14 is enough to keep the little ones quiet in the back seat of the SUV and make it so you don’t have to worry about losing a disc from your box set.

For releasing a no frills single DVD: 1/5

For content: 3.5/5

For telling me to wait a few months for a season box set: 5/5

The movie was great, the series is equally as good, and in case you missed it, It has been airing on Cartoon Network since November of last year (2008).

I was going to dive in and purchase this, but once again the movie makers have decided to give you and I the usual “rip off”

Here are the first four episodes, that carry on pretty much exactly from where the movie finished, and make no mistake the stories, animation and acting (voices) are all excellent, but I ask again, 4 Episodes???

My kids have seen at least 12 screened on TV at around 25 minutes per episode. Are you telling me that we need to buy 3 or 4 separate DVD’s to get a whole series already shown on TV? That’s a joke.

My advice, when it’s all old news (in a few months) a “complete collection” will come out, and I guarantee it will be cheaper. Vote with your wallets folks, stop letting them rip us off.

This is a wonderful film that I saw theatrically some 30 years ago. This blu-ray is sharp and film like, with muted colors appropriate to the story, but still very nice to finally watch in hi def. Don’t expect it to look like a modern day film. I saw several subtle things I hadn’t noticed before, because of the sharp resolution.

The extras are nice, but brief. One short scene and one ‘extension’ plus the alternate (original) ending. Also, there’s a promo piece for distributors with Peter and Hal Ashby. Nice to have these, but I’m wondering what happened to all those hours of videotapes of alternates of the whole film that I read about before. Were they poor quality or impossible to find? I heard some crumbled into dust when played back so perhaps they’re gone for good.

The making of only has Illana Douglas (granddaughter of Melvyn)who was on set as a youngster. (Where is Shirley Maclaine? Most of the others are, of course, no longer with us.)

A no brainer buy for fans and if you haven’t seen it - rent it!

A great performance from Peter Sellers and all involved.

I don’t intend to question the movie, which is excellent indeed. My rating is based on the fact, that this so-called “Deluxe Edition” is only a hoax, a bluff package.

The only bonus material are the recollections of Melvyn Douglas’ granddaughter (16 minutes runtime, intercut with scenes from the movie) and the trailer.

Sorry, that’s not luxurious, but simply ridiculous. Thanks Warner Bros. for another rip-off.
